Step 1 – Write it down
Once you have written it down it becomes far more real for you. Make the goal specific. The more specific you are the easier it will be to envision it. Give yourself a time limit. Without a time limit it is not really a goal. It is just something you would like to do sometime in the future.
In reality, eighty percent of what we set out achieve is accomplished in the last twenty percent of the time available to complete the goal. If we fail to set a deadline then that last twenty percent would never be achieved.
Step 2 – Look at it every day
If you do not constantly remind yourself of your destination, then you are likely to veer off course, get waylaid and distracted. Having our goals written down and in front of us every day make them look achievable. You are sending your brain a message that they can be reached and your brain will constantly even subconsciously create actions that will bring you nearer your destination.
Step 3 – Know and pay the price
There is always a price to pay, but remember with the Slight Edge, it is small easy baby steps. But it is more than likely you will have to give up something or change something you do. You will have to determine if the price is worth paying. But make sure you also calculate the price of not paying the price!
Step 4 – Start with a plan
Now this is where many people go wrong as explained by Jeff Olsen. The plan is not a plan to the finish line but rather a plan to get you started. Like I said in my previous article, plan, do and then review. Make your plan to start, review it and then adjust it to enable you to get to the next step.
Putting too much energy into the plan often leads to nothing happening other than the plan. And nothing will happen if the first step is not taken.
Start with a simple plan and be flexible enough to change it continuously leading to the second, third, fourth etc plan. Along the way some plans may fail and that is ok. Learn form them, move on and adjust the plan.

Preparation is the Key to any Home Business Online Opportunity
I consider myself very lucky that I came across an excellent home based business opportunity that from the very start emphasised the importance of personal growth and development. In his book the Slight Edge, Jeff Olsen recounts a story about Abraham Lincoln who once said;
“Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four hours sharpening the axe”
The point he is making is that when faced with any task he would spend twice as long on working on himself that he would on the job itself.
If you lay a solid foundation beneath your home business online opportunity, then it is far more likely to succeed. Think of the story of the three pigs. The first two pigs took the easy way out and built their houses of straw and sticks. These were the first materials they came across and they were easily convinced that would be successful with them. They alas did not survive very long.
However the third little pig who took time over his planning and foundations and built his house of bricks – well I think you probably know how it ends.
The foundation of your success is your philosophy. This is the source of your success or failure, not how hard you work.

It is important to point out that it is not thinking about the first step but in actually taking it that starts the journey. Personal development and learning alone are not enough if you do not put it into action.
The process is a continuous circle of planning, doing and reviewing. Results including failures should be reviewed, adjusted and improved upon the next time, thus giving a balance of book learning versus ‘doing’ learning. One will not provide success without the other.
The third step after book learning and doing is learning from the masters, following someone who is where you want to be.

Why do we largely stop this method of incentivizing once a child gets a little older? We need to reverse that trend and learn again to appreciate ourselves and those around us. Tell them each day how fantastic they are. And don’t forget it is just as important to appreciate your own efforts.

Babies I think are born with it. They have a very strong inbuilt self-belief. They look around them and see people walking so they decide that should be able to do it. It may take some longer but they get there in the end and most importantly they don’t give up.

Why do the majority seem to gradually lose that self belief and determination as they get older? At what point does the Slight Edge stop working in their favour and start working against them?
When you were small and starting to walk the whole process was slow, uncomfortable and involved a lot of failure before success came. As we get older we are more reluctant to put ourselves into situations that involve discomfort, time or the risk of failure.
Our new fast paced world has conditioned us to expect instant results so we are not willing to put the time required into it. Most of the successful entrepreneurs online such as Mark Dillard will tell you that overnight success is a myth. Success requires consistent effort.
Success also requires us to move outside our comfort zone. It makes sense that if you are currently not succeeding, then you must change what you are doing in order to succeed. Because not changing will not even maintain you as you are it will actually over time lead to even more failure.
I started out as an accountant so I was not used to marketing. I had to step outside my comfort zone and do things I never did before in order to succeed. To fail is not a disaster, not to get up and try again is.

What made me persevere? It was because I wanted to succeed. We feel uncomfortable admitting that we want. Should we care what others think of us? Will we look back on our lives and be glad that we never gave them anything to laugh at? The answer is that if we are able to do that, then we will be one of them, looking back on a failed life. Do not have your life dictated to by the masses who make up that 95% and never go on to achieve their dreams.
Having a dream is uncomfortable. It would be much easier to stay as you are than to dream and work towards that dream. Jeff Olsen in his book tells us that there are two ways to bridge the gap between where we are and where we could be.
The first method involves taking the steps that draw us closer to where we could be until the two points converge. The other method is easier, and the easy route is always the route taken by the 95%. It involves giving up on your dreams thus the point of where you could be disappears leaving no gap!
They gap will inevitably disappear at some stage of your life. The choice of how it is bridged is yours. Ultimately when life is done you will have no-one to answer to only yourself. You owe it to yourself to do yourself proud. You can do it, the only one that can do it is you and the only one that can stop you is you.

Many of us indeed were raised with constant no’s, so we now can blame our parents and society in general for our lack of action. However in my opinion, once you reach adulthood, you should take full responsibility for the direction your life goes in. Regardless of your past you can make the choice, the upward, or the downward curve. The results will be yours, so the only person that can take the action is you.
We all have a past, even successful entrepreneurs. Its how we deal with it that will distinguish us. Learn from your past, don’t dwell in it. The only thing we can change is the future and the sooner we start the better.
The future is your friend. It is more that worth it to sit down and spend some serious time making a vision for your future and planning for it. Once you have this vision, make up your mind that every day you will put time into making that vision a reality.
